Aesthete In Harlem

Strange,
That in this nigger place,
I should meet Life face to face
When for years, I had been seeking
Life in places gentler speaking
Until I came to this near street
And found Life--stepping on my feet!

With Explosion Comes Change

You are what makes me Me
Because of you my whole life changed.

Thinking about what has happened
You never could imagine
About a girl raised in Queens, New York
Where her father would beat her mother
How did it come to this?
When they were alone did he
Punch her?
Slap her?

I can't think about it
I don't want to think about it

Oh mother!

Somebody please do something
A fire has just exploded
I can feel it coming closer
Someone please put it out!
I can't breathe any longer
Please tell me what to do now
I'm so lost,
Confused

Is there anyone there?
Is there anyone there?

As I open my eyes slowly
I see time passby before me
Sisters and bro are growing with me
Mother too is standing strong

Its like breaking silence in the air
With this new life I am prepared.

  1. Hello Nieves,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I've read this and your other poems and you've portrayed such sadness with your words.
Your poems are very personal and expressive and I encourage you to keep writing. You're young and you're a survivor , , , share your strength also. Good luck.

  2. I remember when I read this for the first time. I thought it was full of sadness but when you look at it again, it's really not about sadness, it's more about your childhood and your life now. You haven't had a sad life just some problems like others have had but this is great baaabe you're good at putting words together just like me lol. But seriously you have a great talent and good writing skills. I looove you and I love your emotional/expressive side. Keep it up baby, this is a good way to let your feelings flow and express yourself.
